Seabed type clustering using single-beam echo sounder time series data

چکیده
Acoustic seabed characterisation is known to make available very useful information for various marine related applications. Most existing single-beam echo sounder (SBES) classifications require ground truthing in order to have confidence in the final results and sometimes to relate labels to geological features. A statistical feature extraction approach, with an emphasis on quality control, is proposed as an alternative to extensive ground truthing. Survey data collected from Malin Sea during 2003 is used as a test bed. Principal component analysis (PCA) and k-means as well as quality threshold (QT) local clustering are employed to label the echo return samples with an arbitrary number of classes. Results show that proper quality control enables more geologically realistic seabed type clustering. Key-Words: single-beam; echo sounder; seabed; clustering; PCA; k-means; quality threshold

Computation of Single Beam Echo Sounder Signal for Underwater Objects Detection and Quantification
Underwater Acoustic methods have been extensively used to locate and identify marine objects. These applications include locating underwater vehicles, finding shipwrecks, imaging sediments and imaging bubble fields. Ocean is fairly transparent to sound and opaque to all other sources of radiation. Acoustics technology is the most effective tool for monitoring this environment because of the sou...
متن کاملReproducibility of Single-beam Acoustic Seabed Classification for Habitat Mapping
Single-beam acoustic seabed classification continues to be a popular method for mapping seabeds and their sediments, which are important components of benthic habitat. Modern methods can generate maps of acoustic classes that are useful and reasonably accurate. Research toward improved methods continues. A continuing impediment to this research is ranking the accuracy of maps produced by new me...
متن کاملCorrelation of sidescan backscatter with grain size distribution of surficial seabed sediments
The dependence of acoustic backscatter on sediment grain size distribution is examined using dual frequency (100 and 410 kHz) sidescan sonar and 22 sediment grab samples from the Loch Linnhe artificial reef site on the west coast of Scotland. The sidescan data were processed to remove an empirically estimated average grazing angle dependence on backscatter. The processed data were analysed by f...
متن کاملBottom profiling by correlating beam-steered noise sequences.
It has already been established that by cross-correlating ambient noise time series received on the upward and downward steered beams of a drifting vertical array one can obtain a subbottom layer profile. Strictly, the time differential of the cross correlation is the impulse response of the seabed. Here it is shown theoretically and by simulation that completely uncorrelated surface noise resu...
متن کاملOn - Line Sea Beam Acoustic Imaging
duce acoustic images of the~seafloor on-line with a Sea Beam multibeam echo-sounder. This ystem uses a stand alone interface between the Sea Beam system and a grey-scale line-scan recorder. The interface is built around a Motorola 68000 microprocessor and has digitizing capabilities. I t digitizes the detected echo signals from each of the 16 preformed beams inside the Sea Beam echo process...
